Overview
The Bandar Tumpat Mosque, also known as the Ismaili Bandar Tumpat Mosque, is located in the center of Tumpat, opposite the Tumpat Land and Colony Office and close to the Tumpat Market.
The original building of this mosque was built as early as 1900, after undergoing several changes, this mosque has stood upright until now. The mosque that was built with pure and sincere intentions by the local residents is still thriving even though it is more than a century old.
The original name of this mosque is Masjid Tumpat. After several decades of construction and after undergoing modifications and changes, this mosque was then inaugurated by His Royal Highness Sultan Ismail and named after him.
The original site of the mosque, which is swampy and subject to the ebb and flow of sea water, has affected the basic structure of its construction. The original form was tall, with 5 steps. The original stairs are located upstream and downstream of the mosque, as well as at the back. The original mosque building can accommodate only 100 pilgrims.
The expansion of the site and worship space has gone through several stages. The first change occurred in 1923, when the pillars and the number of steps were lowered from 5 to 3 steps. This progress was made after the site was buried by using garbage and sand to cover the swamp and river channel that stretches from Kampung Tanjung Che Mas to the Tumpat Railway Field.
The second level of change occurred around 1968. This time from a wooden building to a stone building. The original building material (wood), in addition to being used as a construction support material, was also used to build a PASTI school in the mosque area. As early as 1970, the new mosque was fully operational.
Now, the Ismaili Mosque can accommodate as many as 1500 members of the congregation at a time.
