Overview

As-Salam Mosque is one of the mosques in the Kota Bharu City Mosque category. It is under the supervision of the Council of Islamic Religion and Malay Customs of Kelantan (MAIK). This mosque is also responsible for overseeing 21 sub-district mosques around Pengkalan Chepa.

This mosque was built in early 1980 on a 3 1/2 acre piece of land (Courtesy of the Malaysian Ministry of Defense) and began to be used in 1983. In the early stages, this mosque was operated by 2 ustaz from the Malaysian Prisons Department (on a contract basis). namely Al-Fadhil Ust. Mr. Mahmood bin Hj. Ibrahim as the Elder Imam and Al-Fadhil Ust. Mr. Said bin Dato' Hj. Mohd Noor as Young Imam. This situation causes this mosque to be better known as the 'Prison Mosque'.

Then this mosque was officially opened in 1985. The inauguration was completed by YAB Datuk Musa Hitam (Deputy Prime Minister at the time) and its name was later known as Masjid As-Salam, Pengkalan Chepa. MAIK then appointed Tn. Mr. Hassan bin Musa as the Old Imam and Mr. Mr. Said bin Dato' Hj. Mohd Nor as Young Imam.

In 1993, in order to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims, this mosque was enlarged by building 2 prayer rooms that can accommodate a total of 2500 pilgrims. Then in 1996, another additional building was built to accommodate 500 congregation members. Today this mosque can accommodate as many as 5500 worshipers at any one time.

As-Salam Mosque is located approximately 8 km from Kota Bharu Town, Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital and Kubang Kerian Science University Hospital. It is also located just 3 km from Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, Pengkalan Chepa. Its strategic location in the rapidly developing Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Area, as well as being surrounded by primary and secondary schools, boarding schools and higher education centers, results in a densely populated mosque environment.
